坚如磐石：捕获二氧化碳
"捕获二氧化碳只是问题的一部分，捕获之后如何储存？
在过去的 15 年里，有关全球变暖和如何减少不断增加的二氧化碳（CO2）的研究数量急剧增长。碳捕集与封存（CCS）就是这样一个不断发展的领域。冰岛的一个团队可能已经开发出一种方法，可以将捕获的二氧化碳的 95% 安全地储存在玄武岩中对环境无害的碳酸盐矿物中，而且重要的是，这种方法不允许沥滤回到空气中。这种方法是通过二氧化碳-流体-岩石反应进行矿物碳化（即二氧化碳转化为碳酸盐矿物）的一种新形式。
以前，矿物碳化一直受到用于储存二氧化碳的储层的限制。由于缺乏形成碳酸盐矿物所需的富含钙、镁和铁的硅酸盐矿物，目前的储层（如深盐含水层和枯竭的油气储层）受到了限制。冰岛团队使用的玄武岩富含镁硅酸盐和铁硅酸盐，具有高活性。冰岛的 CarbFix 项目将二氧化碳以CO2-H2S混合气体的形式注入玄武岩中。他们注入了 73 吨混合物，其中 55 吨是二氧化碳。他们使用了一种新颖的注入系统，以确保注入的二氧化碳不会脱气和泄漏。该系统将CO2-H2S气体与向下流动的水混合。一旦二氧化碳变得可溶，它就不再具有浮力，而是与钙镁铁岩石发生反应。

研究小组使用的储层很浅，位于雷克雅未克以东 25 公里海利舍伊迪地热发电厂附近地表以下 400 米至 800 米处。为了了解注入的二氧化碳的情况，研究小组用碳-14（14C）对气体进行了标记。他们发现，注入冰岛 CarbFix 地热发电站的二氧化碳在不到两年的时间里，95% 以上都矿化成了碳酸盐矿物。二氧化碳基本上变成了石头，这意味着二氧化碳逸出的安全问题已经得到缓解。
将二氧化碳变成岩石并不是储存温室气体的最廉价方法，而且需要大量的水。不过，地热气体和富含二氧化碳的酸性气体中含有大量的H2S，因此可以用这种方法来捕获。目前的捕获方法成本高昂，除非政府补贴，否则不太可能普及。这种方法可以为减少人为二氧化碳排放提供一种解决方案，解决逸散后储存的主要问题。
